4NCL: Bristol 2 scramble two wins

4NCL Weekend 4, 25-26 March 2000

by John Richards

Last time my report began: "It was a depleted Bristol squad that went into this important weekend. We were short of Burgess, Moskovic and Cobb and then Chris Beaumont had to pull out at the last moment with flu." Not much different this time, except Moskovic could play, Mordue couldn’t and Chris Beaumont withdrew because of prior coaching commitments. Other withdrawals left us with our weakest sides of the season; you could tell this because I was playing.

So, it was a big surprise to pick up two points from this match. Jim Sherwin was due some luck and it turned up at the right time when he bagged a GM scalp. David Moskovic showed why he is such a key player by beating Cafferty. Melanie fought hard to get the last half point needed for victory.

The second division match did not go according to plan. Robert McFarland beat ex-Bristol player Graeme Buckley, but no one else really got going. Maya Buckley made her debut - replacing the absent Sophie Tidman - making it four Buckleys in the two sides, and did extremely well to draw with Ivana Houska. The slow time limit seems to suit her.

The first team were fired up for this match and we really thought we could get something from it. It was very close, but you don't get match points for being close. Jim Sherwin completed a superb weekend with his second win. The plan of holding them on the bottom boards worked perfectly, but the damage was done in the middle.

Bristol 1 are now eighth, so there are four teams below us. However, we are unlikely to be safe unless we get another two points from the final weekend. It's going to be tough and it's going to be a nailbiting finish - again.

The league leaders showed their class and the match quickly became a rout. Robert McFarland got another good result but the rest of us let him down. Two defeats has seen the second team slump to tenth from third with only a theoretical chance of going up.
