Four tie first in strongest ever Grendel tournament

Grendel Blitz, 6 December 1999

Charles Cobb and James Sherwin Thirty four people turned up to pack the Bristol Sports and Social Club for the latest Grendel evening tournament. It was a great success for organiser James Knowles, as not only was it a big turnout, but it was a strong one, with four players over 200. Simon Buckley (Bath, 207) and Charles Cobb (University, 211) were joined by newcomers IM Jim Sherwin from the USA (219) and Evans Quele Suan (212), who has played for Singapore and is now teaching in Taunton. With Melanie Buckley (190) also there, it promised to be an interesting fight for the prize money.

Three of the 200+ players (Sherwin, Suan, and Cobb) duly tied for first place where they were joined by Tom Quilter (University, 163).

The event was held at the Bristol Sports and Social Club. It was a Bristol Grand Prix event, counting as one multiple.

The next event at Grendel will be the Grendel 10' tournament on Monday 20th December 1999, counting as two multiples. Make sure you get there early!
