Cobb is Champ in Tense Finish

Bristol League Congress, 5-7 February 1999

The Avon Gorge, Students Union This year’s League Congress (more photos) had a very healthy entry of about 100 players, considerably up on last season, and there were 27 entries via the Web site. The Open Section was particularly well-supported with a total entry of 24.

Unfortunately, last year’s Bristol Champion, Chris Baker, was not back to defend his title but, in compensation, there were a number of new faces in the Open. Simon Bibby and Paul Griffiths (both Bath) were making their first appearances, and it was another newcomer, Nick Jakubovics (Horfield) who made the early running, storming to 3/3.

Post-mortem: Cobb and Jakubovics In the fourth round, Nick beat Tyson Mordue to become sole leader, where he had to face Charles Cobb (University) who was clear second, half a point behind. With the Championship and £80 first prize resting on it, the game was tense: Nick managed to put a piece en prise and Charles missed it! Nick went on to lose on time so Charles Cobb becomes the Bristol Champion for the first time.
