Lasker in Bristol (1908)

Emanuel Lasker gave several simultaneous exhibitions in Bristol. Ken Whyld has noted ones on 25 and 26 November 1898, 30 January and 22 and 24 February 1908. The following is a contemporary report of the last of these exhibitions.

The Clifton Chronicle and Directory, Wednesday 26 February 1908:
"Dr. Lasker visited the Bristol and Clifton Chess Club on Monday, giving another exhibition of his skill in simultaneous play. The champion was introduced to the players and visitors by Mr. W. Hall, president of the club, and after a short preliminary talk on chess tactics he began the display, taking the opening at thirteen boards and defending at ten boards. The bulk of the games were very steadily contested, and the time from 7.30 to 11 o'clock was not sufficient to bring them all to a conclusion. Dr. Lasker, therefore, summed up the fourteen games which remained unfinished and resigned one game, and gave several draws to other players. The final score was Dr. Lasker 14 wins with eight draws and one loss. Mr. J.L. Daniell was the fortunate winner. Draws were credited to Messrs. H.G. Barnes, H.G. Bockett-Pugh, W. Hall, H.F. Hawkes, C. Jones, J.C. Johnstone, F. Parsons, and the Rev. E.W. Poynton. At the close of the evening's play Dr. Lasker complimented the club on the many excellent games played by its members.
