Sadly, I learned today of the death last Saturday of Downend Chess Club member Robert Freke. Robert joined Downend in 2007 having previously played for some years at Yeovil Chess Club. He was well aware that his chess was not the strongest and not improving as he became older but he was always ready to turn out for the team and on non match nights would happily play against anyone who wanted a game. A very pleasant gentleman.
