Hi all

The Graeme Thomson Memorial returns on Sun 18 March, at Clifton's venue (Polish Ex Servicemans Club, 50 St Pauls Road). It was a great success last year, and I hope many of you can make it this time.

There's a guaranteed £100 first prize in the Open, and as last year there's a prize of an engraved clock for the winner of the Major section (in addition to the cash prize.)

As last year, donations and any profit will go to Macmillan Cancer Support

Entry form is attached

John

Why use Standard play grades in preference to Rapid grades where players have them ?

We use standard grades simply because not everybody has a rapidplay one. To use some and some would skew the sections. Of the players who do have a rapid grade, they are often very different from their standard grade. It is not possible to please all the people all the time, so we take the line of least resistance. People know in advance that we are using standard grades, and enter with that knowledge.

I am explaining all this for the benefit of the readers. Michael already knows the reason, we have had this conversation before. ;)

Oh no we haven't.

We have had conversations about whether games in Bristol rapidplays should be rated and whether blitz rules should be used instead of Rapidplay rules; we haven't discussed much else. Some other tournaments use rapidplay grades if players have them and longplay grades if they dont.

I doubt many people care much about which grades are used, as long as it's stated beforehand. I'd humbly suggest that this is a conversation for another time, or another thread.

Please all turn up, play chess, have fun, and raise some money for a good cause :)

Well I asked because I dont have a standard play grade but have a rapid play grade; I didnt want to play as ungraded. No problem though as I cant now play on that day.

It's Saturday night, and we currently have 40 entries for the Graeme Thomson Memorial! There's plenty of room for more! Come one, come all! No need to book in advance, get there (the Polish Club, Clifton) before 11 am, join in the fun, and no need to worry about grades going up or down...
