Post subject:  FIDE rating the Major section at Bristol congresses

It has been suggested that the Major section as well as the Open section at Bristol congresses should be FIDE rated (as well as ECF graded, not instead of).

In the same way that the ECF expects a League player with Bronze membership to upgrade to Silver level to play in a weekender, they expect players to upgrade to Gold to play in a FIDE rated event.

Of the 33 players in the Major in February, 20 already have FINs ( FIDE Identification Nos.).

Of those 20, 6 are registered through national federations other than England and so would not need gold membership.

Of the 14 registered through the ECF, 8 are gold members or above. Of the other 6, 5 are Bristol players and all 6 would need to upgrade.

Of the 13 players without FINs, only 2, are gold members.

Of the other 11, 9 are Bristol players and all 11 would need to upgrade.

This gives us a total of 14 Bristol players who would need to upgrade to gold membership.

It is not necessary to have a FIN to play in a FIDE rated tournament, registration takes place automatically for no extra than FIDE would charge the congress for a registered player.

FIDE rating the Majors would mean that Bristol players could play rated chess in games of a length they are familiar with, and without the expense and hassle of hotels and travelling connected to the 4NCL.

Comments please.

I support the move towards a FIDE rated Major.

I support this idea very much.

FIDE rated tournaments (like the e2e4 ones) seem to attract a lot of players willing to travel for FIDE games.
